Introducing a new visual experience, Kane & Lynch 2: Dog Days is inspired by documentary filmmakers and the user-generated era. Every aspect of the game has been designed to deliver a fresh perspective to the words ‘intensity’ and ‘realism’ in video games.
History
Development began on Kane & Lynch 2 in October 2007 before the original was even released. On July 8, 2009 Eidos filed a trademark for the title "Kane and Lynch 2: Dog Days", with and without the colon. They also filed a trademark for "Fragile Alliance". In November 2009, the first teaser surfaced on MTV Germany's website. The teaser featured surveillance footage of a naked Kane and Lynch running from gunfire in a Chinese restaurant, chased by a dog.
The teaser accompanied no official logo or title. A few days later, Square Enix officially announced the game, alongside an official version of the aforementioned teaser and a new teaser, featuring Lynch breaking a door using a bowling ball. Days later, a full trailer was released, featuring Lynch awaiting Kane's arrival in Shanghai, and Kane's involvement in a shootout. IO Interactive has mentioned that the visual style of the game will be influenced by documentary filmmaking and user-generated videos.
Plot
The game switches the lead character from Kane to Lynch. Described as a "self-medicated psychopath", Lynch has found a peaceful place in Shanghai where he does bit-jobs for a British gangster known as Mr. Glazer. Lynch and his crew get involved in an arms deal where the pay is beyond their wildest dreams and Lynch decides to call in Kane for backup, as someone with military experience.
According to the press release, Kane and Lynch will find Shanghai "[the] perfect playground for expat criminals such as [themselves]; seduction and corruption highlight the contrasts of the city as players fight through the seedy underbelly of Shanghai – a juxtaposition of old-world and new-world ideals ripe with black market opportunities for Kane and Lynch to exploit and reap rewards from." The game will follow Kane and Lynch over two days and two nights, and over its course, will shed some light onto why the arms deal went awry.
Gameplay
As with the first game, Kane and Lynch 2 will be co-op focused; but this time online co-op will also be supported as opposed to the offline-only co-op mode present in the first game. Competitive online multiplayer also returns for this promising sequel. The squad mechanics from the first game have been dropped, as a design decision was made to make the game more visceral and action-oriented and less tactical. The death mechanic has also been altered into a new mechanic called "Down Not Dead" which allows the injured player to use a hand-gun to shoot at enemies and crawl towards cover while bleeding, until an ally to revives the player.
The cover-system in the game has been redesigned as well. The automatic "sticky cover" system used in the first game has been dropped in favour of the standard button operated system, a la Uncharted or Gears of War.
Another addition to the game from the first is a differing camera style, this time around the camera will have a more gritty feel due to it being shaky and somewhat unpredictable; comparable to how a documentary may be filmed it will make the game appear more real offering more immersion and making onscreen action more shocking. In addition to this there will also be new camera filters which, like many digital cameras, will make the camera's view vulnerable to bright lights and explosions.
Lynch:
Some would say James Seth Lynch is a psychopath, but he would tell you that’s the old Lynch, he’s got it under control now… But it wasn’t always like that. Lynch’s life has been anything but ‘under control.’ Put on death row for the murder of his wife, Lynch has always maintained his innocence, having no recollection of the crime. It was while imprisoned that he was contacted by the mysterious organization known as the The7; they needed his help to free and keep an eye on a fellow inmate, a certain Adam Kane, to retrieve certain items Kane had allegedly stolen from them. After everything blew up in Lynch’s face in Venezuela, he somehow managed to get out alive and headed East. Lynch has now found his feet in Shanghai - a city that has opened its doors to the seductive capitalism of the West - and he’s right there taking advantage of it with his special brand of business initiative. Lynch now has a new life, an easy job and a patient, loving girlfriend. Now things are looking up and Lynch is about to make a big arms deal where the pay is beyond his wildest dreams. Nothing and nobody is about to get in his way. He just needs the help of his old ‘friend’ Kane for one, last job…
Kane:
Kane is a tragic and disillusioned figure, a professional mercenary with no roots, no allegiances and a red-hot temper that has gotten him into serious trouble on a vast number of occasions. He carries a lot of remorse after the death of his wife and son and, still estranged from his daughter Jenny, he doesn’t have much to live for. Kane barely escaped Death Row three years ago when his former employers, the shadowy group known only as The7, sprung him from jail to give him a final offer – get back what he stole and they wouldn’t kill his daughter. The situation quickly got out of hand when Lynch, the thug that had been hired to keep an eye on Kane, turned psycho and set off a series of episodes that eventually got the pair to Venezuela. Here, in an effort to save his daughter, Kane puts his crew's life on the line, including Lynch. Kane’s relationship to Lynch was never mutually beneficial, in fact he had nothing but contempt for the psycho and partnering up again is the last thing he needs. That is, until Lynch tracks him down with an offer he can’t refuse.
